Snoop Dogg Gets NBC Sitcom Deal

He started out as a Long Beach hustler, made his bones as a breakout rap star and has played everything from a loveable stoner to Huggy Bear and an undead gangster in the 2001 horror flick “Bones.”
But is America ready for Snoop Dogg family sitcom star? According to Deadline Hollywood the d-o-double g’s family comedy project has landed at NBC with a script in the works from veteran comedy writer Don Reo (“Blossom,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “My Wife and Kids”).
Snoop, the family man who has managed to strike a balance between lascivious rhyme dropper and pee-wee football coach, will play a dad in the show, which he will also produce. Snoop has already worked with Reo on the Fox sitcom “Brothers,” a show about a former NFL player on which he played the role of cousin Kenny the Lawyer.
He’s already done a dry run as the man of the house in his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood,” which followed his home life with his wife and three kids over two seasons. Snoop has seesawed between music and movies for years and was recently cast in the title role of the biopic “The Legend of Fillmore Slim,” the story of the 1970s San Francisco blues guitarist and pimp who was often referred to as the “West Coast Godfather of the Game.”
Deadline noted that NBC has had mixed success with rapper sitcoms, ranging from the hit 1990s run by Will Smith in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to the notoriously awful 2001 pilot starring “Thong Song” star Sisqo and comedy icon Bob Newhart.

Prosecutors focus on drugs in Jackson’s home

LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors will focus Thursday on the multitude of drugs found in Michael Jackson’s home — propofol, lidocaine, lorazepam and others — as they try to convince a jury that Dr. Conrad Murray is guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the pop singer’s death.
The Houston-based cardiologist insists he is not.
Prosecutors will begin explaining the interaction between the drugs to the jury of seven men and five women and how they led to the pop superstar’s death. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren has said he is calling a toxicology expert and a coroner’s investigator to testify.
It took Walgren more than an hour Wednesday to explain the bottles of medicine with the help of a coroner’s investigator. The drug display came hours after Walgren played a more than four-minute recording of a rambling, slurring Jackson found on Murray’s cell phone just six weeks before the singer died in June 2009.
In the call, Jackson is heard telling Murray he planned to use proceeds from his comeback concerts to build a world-class children’s hospital. After saying he hoped the patients would be spared some of the pain of his own life, Jackson’s voice is heard at the end of the recording, mumbling ominously, “I am asleep.”
Authorities contend a combination of the drugs, the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives, killed Jackson after Murray administered them. Defense attorneys have an alternate theory — the King of Pop gave himself the fatal dose when the cardiologist left the singer’s bedroom.
Many of the medications were found on the third search of Jackson’s mansion, two days after Murray spoke with detectives about the treatments of propofol and other medications to try to help the entertainer sleep. Coroner’s investigator Elissa Fleak catalogued the items, including an empty vial of propofol found on the initial search of Jackson’s bedroom, and her testimony Wednesday led to a drug lineup.
It was a visual display of what jurors had been told for days — in the weeks before Jackson’s death, Murray had been receiving shipments of medications in California, where his only patient was the singer.
Prosecutors appear to be in the final stages of their case, calling the investigators who pieced together the timeline of Murray’s actions on Jackson’s final day. Some of the remaining witnesses will explain how that happened; others will be brought in to explain exactly how Jackson died and try to support the prosecution assertion that Murray was reckless and distracted while giving Jackson propofol, an anesthetic intended for use in hospital settings.
Walgren played a portion of the May 10, 2009 recording of an impaired Jackson speaking with Murray during opening statements last week. The segment focused on the singer’s ambition to top all other entertainers, but the audio played Wednesday revealed both the singer’s plans for the future and his past pain.
“That will be remembered more than my performances,” he says. “My performances will be up there helping my children and always be my dream. I love them. I love them because I didn’t have a childhood … I feel their pain. I feel their hurt. I can deal with it.”

Amy Winehouse died after detox seizure, dad says

Trying to detox from alcohol, Amy Winehouse may have overdosed on a powerful anti-anxiety drug and suffered a seizure, says her father, Mitch Winehouse, adding fresh detail to the picture of the tragic end of a talented, short life.
Speaking in his first interview since the British neo-soul singer was found dead in her bed in London on July 23, Mitch Winehouse told CNN newsman-turned-talk-show host Anderson Cooper that traces of the prescription drug Librium, which also is used to treat withdrawal symptoms during detox from alcoholism, were found in his daughter’s body.
“Everything Amy did, she did to excess,” Winehouse said during the taping of Cooper’s new show, Anderson, debuting Monday. “She drank to excess and did detox to excess.”
He said shortly before her death she had seizures brought on by alcohol withdrawal but had been improving. “The periods of abstinence were becoming longer, and the periods of drinking were becoming shorter,” he said, dabbing tears during video clips of his daughter, the Associated Press reported.
Winehouse acknowledged he was speculating about what had happened; the full picture won’t emerge until after the official inquest into her death, set to begin next month in London. Amy Winehouse had suffered from drug and alcohol addictions for years.
Mitch Winehouse, who is trying to launch his own singing career, appeared on Cooper’s syndicated show in New York with Amy’s mother, Janis Winehouse; Amy’s boyfriend at the time of her death, Reg Traviss; her stepmother and her aunt.
The family is speaking out now to help promote the foundation they have set up in London to raise money to help people fight alcohol and drug addictions.
Cooper’s show donated $50,000 to the foundation after the interview was set up, a spokeswoman acknowledged, but it was not a payment for the interview.

Pearl Jam au Centre Bell: une nostalgie féerique
Il est souvent difficile d’exprimer ou de partager le bonheur et l’euphorie immédiate que l’on ressent dans certaines situations précises de la vie. Pourtant, dès 20h50 le 7 septembre 2011 au Centre Bell à Montréal, un peu plus de 15 000 personnes ont partagé la même exaltation lorsqu’ils virent les membres de Pearl Jam faire leur entrée sur scène. Après six ans d’absence dans la métropole, Eddie Vedder et ses quatre comparses mettaient enfin un terme à cette longue attente!
La foule survoltée se mit immédiatement à chanter à tue tête aussitôt qu’ils entendirent les premiers mots de la belle « Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town ». S’enchaînèrent « Last Exit » et « Hail Hail » avant qu’Eddie ne prononce qu’un seul mot : « Montreal ». Une ovation d’environ cinq minutes s’en suivi, Vedder sautait d’un bout à l’autre de la scène le sourire fendu jusqu’aux oreilles : une soirée mémorable en perspective. Après « The Fixer » tirée de leur dernier album Backspacer, le chanteur avoua que malgré que ça ne soit que la première date de la tournée canadienne, ils se sentent déjà très contents et très reconnaissants et aussi que Montréal avait du goût, car plusieurs sont arrivés assez tôt pour voir la première partie de Mudhoney.
Le groupe de grunge mythique, également de Seattle, qui a fait ses débuts à la fin des années ’80, a certainement su influencer les débuts d’autres légendes telles que Kurt Cobain et les membres de Pearl Jam eux-mêmes. C’était donc un honneur de les voir assurer la première partie de la soirée, mais malheureusement, la sonorité du Centre Bell ne leur faisait vraiment pas honneur.
Également de Backspacer, la chanson « Amongst the Waves » fut la suivante durant laquelle le légendaire guitariste Mike McCready éxécuta un de ses premiers solo à couper le souffle. Après « Severed Hand », ils jouèrent une partie de « Setting Forth », une pièce de la trame sonore du film Into The Wild, composée par Vedder. Une demande spéciale du batteur Matt Cameron.
Sitôt les premières notes de « Corduroy » (Vitalogy) entamées, le Centre Bell vrombit de plus belle et encore plus fort lorsqu’ils continuèrent avec « Given to Fly » (Yield). La foule chantait à l’unisson chaque « oh! », « ah! », chaque respiration d’Eddie était suivie minutieusement par ses fans. Les grands coups de guitares, ponctués d’impressionnants jeux de lumières durant lesquels on pouvait apercevoir des milliers de poings dans les airs donnaient la chair de poule.
Il est impressionnant de voir comment Vedder demeure près d’une si grande foule lorsqu’ils répondent tous ensemble à ses nombreux cris, sans qu’il ait même besoin de le demander, comme pendant la fameuse « Daughter », de l’album Vs. « Glorified G », « ½ Full », « Do The Evolution », « Unthought Known » et « Why Go » terminèrent la première portion de ce spectacle bien rempli de 2h30.
Le décor simpliste affichant un gigantesque « PJ » fait de colonnes de sons identiques aux vraies qui se retrouvaient sur la scène fut changé rapidement et en quelques minutes, Vedder, McCready, Gossard, Ament et Cameron revinrent aussitôt pour le premier encore. Bouteille de vino à la main, Vedder s’exclama en français : « C’est magnifique! » et le groupe s’attaqua ensuite aux choses sérieuses en jouant une série de vieux succès. « Even Flow », pendant laquelle McCready nous prouva encore une fois qu’il est probablement né avec une guitare dans les mains, commença le bal. S’en suivi trois pièces jouées plus rarement : « Come Back », « Sleight of Hand » et « Down ». Puis au grand plaisir de tous, enfin, la longue et majestueuse balade « Black ». « Arms Aloft », la très courte « Lukin » et « Porch » conclurent avec force le début de la fin. Les cris et les fameux « Olé! Olé! » s’intensifièrent de plus belle.
À son dernier retour, Vedder lu son horoscope du jour qui lui recommandait de se tenir loin des gens et des endroits déprimants et d’aller là où l’on y joue de la musique et les gens sont heureux. Pour lui, une journée de plus au travail finalement! Il remercia Montréal pour la énième fois, puis amorça les quatre dernières pièces : « Better Man », « Crazy Mary », « Alive » et sans jamais oublier celle qui termine tous leurs concerts depuis maintenant plusieurs années, « Yellow Ledbetter ». Mike McCready interpréta les dernières notes assis au bord de la scène, toutes les lumières déjà allumées. Ça aurait pu continuer encore une heure…
Merci Pearl Jam et n’attendez pas encore six ans pour revenir cette fois!
Le documentaire « Pearl Jam Twenty » de Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky), sera en première au Toronto International Film Festival le 10 septembre prochain et en salle un soir seulement à Montréal le 20 septembre. Un livre et une trame sonore vont accompagner ce film qui célèbre le groupe et les vingt ans de leur premier album Ten, sorti en 1991.

Selena Gomez To Host 2011 VMA Pre-Show

With Lady Gaga slated to open the show and performances on tap from Lil Wayne and Adele, among others, the 2011 Video Music Awards are already mega. But things will heat up even before those stars take the stage thanks to Selena Gomez, who has been tapped to kick off the night’s festivities as the celebrity host on the pre-show black carpet.
The platinum recording artist and Emmy Award-winning actress will anchor the pre-show on Sunday, August 28, starting at 8 p.m. (live Eastern Time/ tape-delayed Pacific Time), reporting on breaking news and interviewing her peers alongside MTV’s team of correspondents, including Sway Calloway, Jim Cantiello and James Montgomery.
“I am very excited to be a part of the 2011 VMAs! After all of my years watching the VMAs, the pre-show has always been one of my favorite parts. It is a true honor to be hosting from the black carpet this year,” Gomez said in a statement.
Gomez will get some help from Cobra Starship, who will perform their dance hit “You Make Me Feel,” featuring Sabi, live during the VMA Pre-Show, which will also include an exclusive new teaser of “Jersey Shore.”
“We are so excited to be a part of the 2011 VMAs! I grew up watching them every year and it was an honor to be nominated two years ago and it is an even bigger honor to be able to play the pre-show this year,” said Cobra Starship guitarist Ryland Blackinton. “I will never forget when Pat Smear left the Foo Fighters live during the pre-show, and I’m planning on having him replace me this year.”
While Gomez is meeting and greeting the celebs on the black carpet, MTV News correspondents will bring you interviews with some of today’s hottest stars. We’ll set up shop in the lobby of a downtown Los Angeles hotel that is being transformed into a musical time portal featuring a paparazzi photo arena as the centerpiece to all the pre-show madness.

In between, Cantiello will keep an eye on MTV News’ Twitter Tracker, which will provide updates on the global VMA conversation on Twitter and show the volume of Twitter traffic about VMA nominees, presenters, performers and attendees. He’ll also tweet photos from the paparazzi theater and ask fans to use them to make fan art and send them back so he can display them during the broadcast while he tweets about all the black-carpet action @MTV.
MTV News will also bring viewers a first look at the new Nicki Minaj video “Fly,” featuring Rihanna. The lead-in to the pre-show will be an all-new episode of “Jersey Shore” at 7 p.m. ET/PT, with the cast popping in to the live pre-show to predict who the night’s big winners will be.
As previously announced, Adele and Wayne will take the stage in addition to Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Young the Giant. Confirmed presenters include Jonah Hill, Rick Ross, Seth Rogen, Gomez, Kim Kardashian and Odd Future. MTV will announce additional performers and presenters in the coming days.

Twisted Sister : de l’énergie à revendre

QUÉBEC – Twisted Sister avait promis d’offrir aux gens de Québec un concert intense : exactement ce à quoi ont eu droit 10 000 admirateurs enthousiastes, samedi soir, à Expo-Québec.
Même s’ils ont mis de côté leur maquillage au profit d’un air de « bad boys », les cinq gars de Twisted Sister ont su, une fois de plus, prouver qu’ils étaient capables de faire mentir leur âge.
Le chanteur Dee Snider, avec sa fameuse crinière blonde, est débarqué sur scène complètement déchaîné, vêtu d’un long manteau en cuir noir. Avec de l’énergie à revendre, en forme comme tout artiste pourrait rêver de l’être une fois âgé de 60 ans, Snider est clairement celui qui a su maintenir l’intérêt du début à la fin du concert.
À plusieurs reprises, il n’a pas hésité à se rouler sur les planches de la scène. Au diable les retours de son : vive la folie.
Des classiques « heavy »
De la quinzaine de chansons qui ont été jouées, c’est évidemment les titres les plus connus qui ont semblé plaire le plus au public.
À mi-chemin de We’re Not Gonna Take It, Dee Snider s’est d’ailleurs amusé en soulignant que la chanson est « si connue que certains ne savent même pas qu’elle est de Twisted Sister, mais c’est correct », a-t-il lancé, avant d’inviter la foule à scander le refrain, sans musique. Facile, mais toujours efficace.
Après I Wanna Rock, le public en a demandé encore, et c’est sans trop se faire attendre que Twisted Sister a offert Come Out And Play et Under The Blade. Éternellement reconnaissant, le groupe a quitté la scène sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. De vraies « rock stars ».
Véritables mordus
Dès 21 h, le groupe se faisait déjà attendre de pied ferme. Certains faisaient le pied de grue depuis le matin. C’est le cas de Gilles Bernier, 20 ans, qui, avec ses parents, avaient fait la route de Rimouski jusqu’à Québec pour être certains de ne rien manquer. « C’est un de mes groupes favoris », a lancé le jeune mordu de Twisted Sister. Lui et ses parents n’avaient d’ailleurs pas hésité à se rendre à New York, au printemps dernier, pour assister à un des rares spectacles du légendaire groupe heavy métal.
Cas semblable avec Guillaume Lévesque, 12 ans, de Québec. Déguisé comme le chanteur Dee Snider le faisait il y a une trentaine d’années, il n’a pas manqué de se faire remarquer par ses rockers préférés. Ces derniers l’ont d’ailleurs invité en arrière-scène le temps de pouvoir se faire photographier avec eux.
Pour ajouter à son moment de gloire, le petit Guillaume a même été invité par les organisateurs à grimper sur scène pour présenter le groupe.

Organizers of the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium have decided to cancel the remainder of the music event after a storm killed five people and injured more than seventy festival goers when the stage collapsed in high winds.
Billboard reports that the 2011 Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium has been canceled after a storm destroyed the stage, video screens, tents and was responsible for the deaths of five people. The storm also resulted in the injury of more than seventy people.
The Pukkelpop Festival had such acts in the line-up as as Eminem, the Offspring, the Kills, Lykke Li, the Deftones, and Wild Beasts, but organizers decided to call off the remainder of the festival due to the deaths and destruction.

‘Last Friday Night’ brings Katy Perry to record-holding status

American singer and songwriter, Katy Perry, 26, has tied with the “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson, as having five No. 1 hits from the same album on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Last Friday Night” has recently brought her to five, joining her other hits, “California Gurls,” the title track, “Firework,” and “E.T,” according to BBC Newsbeat.
After finding out “Last Friday Night,” went to No. 1, Perry tweeted, “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1.”
“Think about the big artists that haven’t accomplished this,” a celebrity correspondent from E! News stated, according to CBS News. “Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber — hasn’t even had a top 10 hit yet, yet Katy Perry has come out with an album with five huge No. 1 singles. I mean, it’s a big, big accomplishment.”
Let’s not forget, this is only Perry’s second album. Although Jackson scored his five number ones in a shorter span of time than Perry, she has spent longer (18 weeks) at No. 1.

Blink 182: party d’ados au Centre Bell

Les enfants prodigues du punk californien, Blink 182, sont de retour après des années d’incertitude provoquée par ce qu’on a poliment appelé des «tensions internes». À un mois du lancement de Neighbourhoods, son sixième album et le premier en huit ans, le power trio n’a pas laissé paraître ses anciennes querelles mardi soir dernier, au Centre Bell, offrant 90 minutes bien tassées de pop-punk et de blagues niaiseuses. Comme dans le bon vieux temps, quoi.
Question : a-t-on besoin d’un retour de Blink 182? Pour 11 100 fans, la réponse était tout de même floue. Oui, ça faisait plaisir de réentendre les succès du groupe, mais les quelques nouvelles chansons offertes pendant ce concert sont carrément tombées à plat. Va pour le vieux stock, mais le nouveau aura du mal à convaincre.
Le public de ces Californiens a vieilli et ne semble pas vraiment s’être renouvelé – pas encore, en tous cas. Gars et filles dans la mi-vingtaine, jeunes ados à l’époque de Enema of the State, le plus gros succès discographique du trio (15 millions d’exemplaires dans le monde) lancé en 1999, ont toutefois chanté à nouveaux les refrains rassembleurs des All The Small Things, What’s My Age Again? et autres I Miss You qui ont fait le succès du groupe.
Le concert a débuté avec l’annonce au micro du fils du batteur (et star d’une télé-réalité) Travis Barker – pendant tout le concert, le petit bonhomme jouait de la batterie, caché derrière les amplis du guitariste Tom DeLonge! Pendant ce temps-là, sa jeune soeur restait sagement assise près de la batterie de papa, avec son gros casque rose sur la tête pour protéger ses tympans.
Les deux premières chansons ont sonné la charge : retour dans le temps avec l’endiablée (une des inédites de la compilation de 2005) sous un déluge de stroboscope et de ballons de plage, puis les sparages plus sombres et lents de Up All Night et sa longue finale instrumentale, premier extrait de l’album à paraître le 27 septembre.
« Merci beaucoup Montréal! », a alors dit, en français, le dégourdi bassiste Mark Hoppus, qui a échangé les blagues débiles avec DeLonge toute la soirée, comme d’habitude. Blagues inoffensives et souvent en lien avec les parties génitales, que le bassiste (ou était-ce DeLonge) se proposait de planter dans de la poutine… Voyez le genre.
Le groupe a tôt fait de mettre de l’ambiance dans son décor de quartier classe moyenne, enfilant ensuite les bombes The Rock Show et What’s My Age Again. Malgré les recommandations affichées aux portes du Centre Bell, oui, mosh pit il y eut, oui, la sécurité a dû extraire du parterre quelques crowdsurfers. Après, malheureusement, ça s’est calmé. Trop de ballades ou de morceaux au tempo modéré : Down, I Miss You, Stay Together for the Kids, les refrains qui roulent tout seul étaient intacts, mais l’énergie juvénile dont Blink 182 s’est fait manufacturier était cruellement absente.
Ça a évidemment repris, après moult blagues entre DeLonge et Hoppus, qui affichaient une franche camaraderie pendant que Barker se préoccupait plutôt de sa progéniture. La hache de guerre, qui avait mis en veilleuse l’avenir du groupe en 2005, semblait enterrée.
Du point de vue strictement musical, c’est toutefois (encore) Barker qui vole le show. Ce type-là n’a pas volé sa réputation du meilleur massacreur de peaux de la scène South-Cal punk. Même les compositions plus banales resplendissent par la rigueur de son jeu. Le tatoué instrumentiste tente même au rappel de remporter la couronne du plus spectaculaire solo de batterie de l’histoire du punk : il s’attache à une chaise derrière une seconde batterie et, soulevée par une immense grue fixée au plafond, escrime avec les cymbales sur des rythmiques hip-hop pré-enregistrées en se baladant au-dessus des têtes des fans au parterre.
Bref, les retrouvailles furent réussies. Reste à voir si le prochain album Neighbourhoods permettra à Blink 182 de refaire un tour de piste de cette envergure.
